CHICAGO, IL. – Hargrove Madden LLP, a national estate planning law firm based out of Kentucky, has been named as the recipient of the 2012 American Bar Association’s James Keane Award for Excellence in eLawyering. This national award is bestowed upon one law firm in the US every year. Its purpose is to recognize law firms that have developed methods of innovative delivery of personal legal services, with special attention given to firms that serve both moderate income individuals and the broad middle class.
Hargrove Madden, with just under 30 attorneys, is the first boutique law firm to establish a national online estate-planning law practice with offices in over 20 states. Hargrove Madden is also the first law firm to directly respond on a national level to do-it-yourself document companies, none of which are law firms.
“Document companies are not only providing do-it-yourself non-lawyer drafted forms, but they are also trying to be all things to all people,” said Jim Newberry, the managing partner of the law firm. “If you want a divorce, go bankrupt, start a business, get a patent, and need a dozen other “legal” services and get a will, there are several form-only companies to choose from. If you want to pay a little more and have a national law firm, one that is solely focused on estate planning documents and services, work with you in connection with your estate planning needs, then there is only one option, Hargrove Madden.”
Co-Founding Partner Roger Madden said: “Everyone can benefit from a Last Will and Testament, a Living Trust, as well as medical and financial Powers of Attorney. Together, these documents can help families avoid some of the burdens associated with estate administration and the probate process.”
And New York City Partner Kevin Ghassomian added: “We are excited to be able to leverage our technology and the internet to make those services readily available to everyone in a very cost-effective manner.”
The cost for online services is about 50 percent less than going through the traditional office visit approach. Other benefits include giving families the assurance of knowing the exact cost of the services to be provided rather than the traditional, open-ended arrangement of billing by the hour as well as offering them the convenience of not having to take off work to schedule an appointment in a law office.
Here’s how it works:
• Clients log on to the web-based client portal, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Through a multi-media questionnaire designed by lawyers to replicate a face-to-face interview, clients select a plan based upon the needs identified through their answers.
• Document drafts are then generated through quality assurance checks before being finalized by attorneys licensed in the client’s state to ensure state compliance and appropriateness for the client’s situation as revealed by their answers on the questionnaire.
• Plans are delivered to the client by email or regular mail, along with detailed execution instructions.
Hargrove Madden has become one of the largest practices in the country that focuses solely on estate planning and other areas of the estate and trust practice. Driven by its own lawyers and technology, Hargrove Madden’s personalized touch paired with cost-effective, comprehensive estate planning services delivered through the internet is undoubtedly unique.
